Hand-thrown jugs made here beside St Mungo’s Well

Valleyfield House and St Mungo's Well are tucked away in the heart of Penicuik through a High Street archway. Jugs are still filled at the well in the garden. The spring still flows as it has since long before the days of Penicuik’s patron saint (533-615). Deer drink at the well and doves gather in the garden. But the home of the doves that stood here in older times --Valleyfield’s ancient lectern dookit-- is now just a fading image in an early calotype photograph, and was possibly removed to Morningside more than a century ago.
