ST. VALENTINES DAY

SATURDAY 14 FEBRUARY 2009 at 7.30

Welcome to the skyhook website

skyhook are an exciting collaboration of three of the finest acoustic musicians. Martin Harwood, Cath James and Eoin Teather play traditional tunes and songs from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton Island, plus brand new self-penned compositions.  skyhook are breathtaking twin fiddles combined with sublime guitar, bouzouki and voice. They shift seamlessly between driving dance music and spine-tingling songs, and play with a joy and precision that's hard to match.

"astoundingly good" - Stirrings Magazine  "overwhelmingly blown away by a stunning three piece... Two superb fiddlers accompanied by a fine, fine guitarist (who also turned out to be an unbelievably good singer)" - Keith Donnelly  “Acoustic trio skyhook create fabulous Celtic folk with a mixture of glorious abandon and respect for the music's traditions, which makes for lovely energising listening." - Musician magazine

CELTER

SCHMELTER

Gica Loening - fiddle, Lewis Powell- Reid - accordion, Fraser Watson - poik, Jenny Hill - double bass.

Echoing the sound of the human voice, Klezmer, the wedding dance music of old Eastern Europe, conveys a feeling of “laughter through tears”. Celter Schmelter, Scottish based Klezmer ensemble evoke that heartfelt tension between joy and sadness of the Jewish shtetl (village) wedding. Celter Schmelter have been the social glue of many Scottish/Jewish gatherings, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and festivals around the country. From irresistible dance tunes, to poignant, a-rhythmic doinas, let the music of Celter Schmelter transport you to the old world of the Klezmorim – to a world of passionately felt music, simple, haunting, and played from the heart.

PENICUIK ARTS

SATURDAY 20 JUNE 2009

Three years after their first gig at Penicuik Arts we welcome back the legendary chris and thomas. With sounds gathered from the landscapes of the American southwest, their beautifully woven harmonies and sparse instrumentation will make you think of big skies with small clouds. Chris and Thomas made their name on the Los Angeles club circuit, playing and singing round a single condenser mike like the old bluegrass bands. They overlay their ‘roots’ playing style with soothing vocal harmonies in songs dark with thoughtful lyricism harking back to Simon & Garfunkel. Their song "Take These Thoughts" won the Independent Music Awards in the US as best Americana.  Although they’ll perform in bigger venues as part of this European tour, you can see them up close up in Penicuik and hear them just as they should be heard. Penicuik Arts Centre on June 20th 2009 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 from the Arts Centre, 2 - 4 West Street EH26 9DL telephone 01968 678804. Refreshments are available on the night.

With special guest Ewan MacPherson

Read more about Chris and Thomas on their website http://www.chrisandthomas.com/
"soulful lyricism and brilliant musicianship. The songs are all equally mesmerizing, and the performances are simply magical.”  - Russell Cook, The Hotel Café, Los Angeles       “If you thought West Coast harmony singing went out of fashion with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, think again. Breezing in with a ravishing exhibition of acoustic loveliness come chris and thomas, two ultra talented dudes with mellow voices that complement each other perfectly.” -The Sun
