Stewart Hardy and Frank McLaughlin

WORKSHOPS

Guitar Masterclass with Frank McLaughlin  £20
This masterclass for intermediate players will cover a range of techniques used in accompanying traditional music and song and will include flat picking a tune and exploring chord voicings, rhythms and dynamics. The second part of the workshop will look at finger-picking ideas for accompanying voice, using traditional songs as examples.

Fiddle Masterclass with Stewart Hardy £20
This masterclass will explore repertoire from seventeenth century to the present day, with a special focus on the work of James Hill. The workshop will look at bowing styles and ornamentation with a view to their wider application and also at general considerations such as tone production and improvising around a tune.

Mixed-Instrument Workshop with Frank McLauglin and Stewart Hardy £20
For all levels. This workshop will examine arranging tunes and songs and will be divided into melody instruments (Stewart) and chordal or accompanying instruments (Frank). There will be an investigation of what each instrument can do and how to create different effects and textures in music. Suitable for players from most musical genres.

Stewart Hardy and Frank McLaughlin

in concert

'A richly talented duo with a deep knowledge of their craft'

Fiddle virtuoso Stewart Hardy and Scottish guitarist/piper Frank McLaughlin have a rare musical kinship, holding listeners spellbound with interplay as they explore music rooted in the traditions of Scotland, the Borders and Northumbria and incorporate sensibilities from the worlds of classical, blues, klezmer and jazz.

Stewart Hardy is one of the most exciting fiddle players in North East England. Much in demand as a session player and fiddle tutor, he spent six years as an influential member of the very popular John Wright Band and has performed throughout the world in other contexts, playing many genres of music. He was Folkworks’ Artist in Residence for the Year of the Artist millennium project and works as a core tutor on Newcastle University’s Folk degree course.

Frank McLaughlin is a first-class guitarist and piper who has worked with many top musicians in the Scottish scene. He is regularly in demand as a session player and teacher and has worked on numerous recording projects including The Complete Songs of Robert Burns (Linn Records) and The Complete Songs of Robert Tanahill. He also performs with the celebrated Mick West Band and traditional singer Gillian MacDonald. He delivers specialist guitar workshops in traditional music throughout the UK.

Stewart and Frank recently completed a recording of mainly self-penned material.

hallam foe

“Jamie Bell is terrific”

Hallam Foe, a smart coming-of-age tale from David Mackenzie (the director of Young Adam).

Jamie Bell plays the hero, so cut up by his mother's suicide he runs off to Edinburgh to find a girl just like her.

Mackenzie takes pains to keep him this side of likeable, as he weaves an intriguing web of mystery, romance and farce.

Backed by Giles Nuttgens' atmospheric widescreen visuals, kooky animated titles and a too-cool-for-school indie soundtrack,

Hallam Foe is an impressive return to form for Mackenzie.

Bell is terrific in a role that finally allows him to lay Billy Elliot to rest.

THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES

age range: 7+ to adult    55mins     supported by Midlothian Council

A magical, comical, multi-sensory (including smell!) adaptation of Jean Giono’s well-loved story.

With his faithful dog, a French shepherd sets out to plant a forest and revive a barren and desolate land.

Hear the wind, feel the rain and smell the lavender grow on the mountainside.

A memorable blend of comedy and puppetry -inspired storytelling.  Hilarious, yet profound it’s a wonderful parable of life.

A human being who saw a need and decided not to ignore but to put things right..

“I have reviewed over 35 shows at the Fringe for three weeks and this is undoubtedly the best.-Tommy Chambers

Absolutely wonderful. Everyone has come out smiling on the inside and the outside!” Beth Edwards, Polka Theatre

FIND YOUR FAMILY HISTORY

On Saturday 12th January, John Stevenson and three other experienced members of The Scottish Genealogy Society and the Leith Local History Society came to a busy Penicuik CDT Open House to answer questions about tracing your family tree. They had information about organisations and how to get involved. There were helpful booklets on view and for sale including a starter pack. To help people get started locally Linda Torrubia and Hugh Munro were there to represent the Penicuik Family History Group which meets twice weekly at Penicuik High School.  Jane Kelly discussed family tree problems and displayed full 1881 census results for Scotland, England and Wales.
