During the war in 1944, three Italian prisoners of war arrive

in an isolated community in the Black Isle to help with the farming.

Ignored by the locals, worried about families at home, and miserable

in the Scottish climate, they are finally befriended by a cowman's wife.

The film explores what happens to a community when people of a

different culture are forced to live and work among them.

Michael Radford's 1996 Oscar nomination for Best Director and Best Screenplay for Il Postino

later established him as one of the most important British film directors of his generation.

hallam foe

“Jamie Bell is terrific”

a smart coming-of-age tale from David Mackenzie (the director of Young Adam).

Jamie Bell plays the hero, so cut up by his mother's suicide he runs off to Edinburgh to find a girl just like her.

Mackenzie takes pains to keep him this side of likeable, as he weaves an intriguing web of mystery, romance and farce.

Backed by Giles Nuttgens' atmospheric widescreen visuals, kooky animated titles and a too-cool-for-school indie soundtrack,

Hallam Foe is an impressive return to form for Mackenzie.

Bell is terrific in a role that finally allows him to lay Billy Elliot to rest.

MIDLOTHIAN’S TRUE GENIUS OF FILM

BILL DOUGLAS TRILOGY: My Childhood, My Ain Folk, My Way Home

filmed 1970-78 in Newcraighall, Edinburgh & Egypt   Cert 15

with Stephen Archibald, Hughie Restorick, Helena Gloag, Joseph Blatchley

My Childhood (1972) 46 min  My Ain Folk (1973) 55 min  My Way Home (1978) 71 min

Special Arts Festival screening of all 3 films £8 (£6) doors open 6.45 starts 7.15 pm

Bill Douglas' autobiographical trilogy sees through his childhood’s eyes the mining village of Newcraighall in the aftermath of the Second World War, abandoned by his father, his mother unstable, friendship from a prisoner-of-war.  These pioneering masterpieces of cinema realism won the highest accolades —The Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and special prizes at Berlin—but are rarely seen in Britain. "They are unique—no other piece of cinema ever showed those quietly shivering landscapes" Jamie is played with heart-breaking conviction by Stephen Archibald.  In brutal surroundings, and subject to hardship and rejection,  he must fend for himself.  We see him grow from child to adolescent – angry and bewildered, but playful, creative and affectionate. “Watching the Trilogy is far from a depressing experience. This is cinematic poetry: Douglas contracted his subject matter to the barest essentials – dialogue is kept to a minimum, and fields, slag heaps and cobbled streets are shot in bleak monochrome. Yet with its unexpected humour and warmth, the Trilogy brims with clear-eyed humanity, and affection for an ultimately triumphant young boy.”

Devastatingly comic and painfully tragic, Danny Boyle's picture of Edinburgh youth culture and its recreational habits put Irvine Welsh's hard-hitting novel on the international map. Ewan McGregor is brilliant as smartaleck junkie Renton, and Robert Carlyle gives a stunning performance as the violent Begbie. This is a savagely sophisticated work and a landmark British classic.

Ingmar Bergman's chilling, audacious and awe-inspiring masterpiece. Set in mediaeval Europe, a knight returns from the crusades as plague stalks the land. The film opens in an iconic scene with the knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) gambling for his life in a chess game with Death. Melvyn Bragg wrote "Somehow all of Bergman's own past .. poured into a series of pictures that carry the most mysterious revelation of simply being alive."
